Get a WFR, or Wilderness First Responder, certification and not only will you know the right way to treat a snakebite (don’t suck out the venom, cowboy), you’ll also join the top tier of applicants for guide jobs. The week-long course costs anywhere from $600 to more than $1,000.

Most whitewater rafting outfitters offer guide training in April and May. These courses usually cost something, but are typically open to all healthy, sane people who would rather be sunburned, adrenaline-addled river rats. Just call and ask.
There’s no outdoor gig quite like being an instructor wtih the National Outdoor Leadership School. NOLS staff are the very best in the adventure business, and guide trips in some of the most beautiful places on Earth. Tuition for the standard month-long tuition course is $4,665.
